About This Guide

This manual introduces you to a variety of applications shipping with openSUSE®. It guides you through using these applications and helps you perform key tasks. It is intended mainly for end users.

The manual is subdivided into the following parts:

Office and Collaboration

Use the office and collaboration software openSUSE offers, such as the OpenOffice.org suite, several e-mailing and calendaring programs, and applications for online conversations. Also find vital information concerning the management and exchange of data on your system: how to share files on the network, how to effectively search and encrypt data, and how to manage printers.

Internet

Find out how to use the Internet applications included in openSUSE, such as Konqueror or the Firefox Web browser, a download manager, or a news feed reader.

Multimedia

Get to know applications for graphics manipulation, management of digital photographs, sound manipulation and editing, and for CD and DVD writers.

Start-Up (↑Start-Up)

Guides you through the installation and basic configuration of your system. For newcomers, the manual also introduces basic Linux concepts such as the file system, the user concept and access permissions and gives an overview of the features openSUSE offers to support mobile computing. Provides help and advice in troubleshooting.

KDE User Guide (↑KDE User Guide)

Introduces the KDE desktop of openSUSE. It guides you through using and configuring the desktop and helps you perform key tasks. It is intended mainly for users who want to make efficient use of KDE as their default desktop.

GNOME User Guide (↑GNOME User Guide)

Introduces the GNOME desktop of openSUSE. It guides you through using and configuring the desktop and helps you perform key tasks. It is intended mainly for end users who want to make efficient use of GNOME desktop as their default desktop.

Application Guide

Learn how to use and configure key desktop applications on openSUSE. This guide introduces browsers and e-mail clients as well as office applications and collaboration tools. It also covers graphics and multimedia applications.

Reference (↑Reference)

Gives you a general understanding of openSUSE and covers advanced system administration tasks. It is intended mainly for system administrators and home users with basic system administration knowledge. It provides detailed information about advanced deployment scenarios, administration of your system, the interaction of key system components and the set-up of various network and file services openSUSE offers.

Novell AppArmor Administration Guide (↑Novell AppArmor Administration Guide)

Contains in-depth information about the use of Novell AppArmor in your environment. AppArmor is a security application that lets you specify per program which files the program may read, write, and execute.

Lessons For Lizards

A community book project for the openSUSE distribution. A snapshot of the manual written by the open source community is released on an equal footing with the Novell/SUSE manuals. The lessons are written in a cook book style and cover more specific or exotic topics than the traditional manuals.
